Campfire to Stagelight by David Hudson and Cindy Hudson with Kathryn Ash – Showcase Performance at Bulmba-ja Arts Centre
Event by JUTE Theatre Company and Cairns Tropical Writers Festival.
Far North Queensland-born First Nations singer-songwriter, storyteller, dancer, actor, and visual artist, David Hudson, presents a showcase performance of a new work that brings to the stage the story of his lifetime that is both epic as The Dreamtime and as intimate as a camp fire yarn.
From humble beginnings in Far North Queensland, the career of this Ewamian Man from the South-West and Western Yalangi, spanning over 35 years in cultural tourism and the arts, is stunning and inspirational.
He has traversed the world promoting cultural awareness, understanding and reconciliation, co-founding the award-winning dance troupe ‘Tjapukai’, whose achievements include being Australia’s longest running theatrical production. David has emerged as a strong cultural leader with a significant arts practice. And this larger-than-life artist, whose personality can fill a stage, still has a few more extraordinary stories to tell. Developed in partnership with JUTE and with support from the Arts Queensland First Nations Commission fund awarded to David in 2020, this new regional First Nations showcase event is not a full performance of the work, rather a work-in-progress showing. It will give audiences entertaining and intriguing insights into the work’s development process and a chance to ask questions and give the artists feedback.
Campfire to Stage Light will be performed in a full theatrical season in 2022, co-produced between JUTE Theatre Company and David’s own company Dideralia, and the show will be a stunning performance feature of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. This opportunity to see David Hudson’s creative development outcomes is a partnership between JUTE and Cairns Tropical Wristers Festival.
