Sonja Carmichael & Elisa Jane Carmichael — Dabiyil Bajara (Water Footprints) at Tanks Arts Centre

Event by Cairns Indigenous Art Fair and Tanks Arts Centre.

Dabiyil Bajara (Water Footprints) is a series of large-scale immersive cyanotypes, woven sculptures, stories of water over deep time by Quandamooka artists and mother daughter duo Sonja Carmichael and Elisa Jane Carmichael.

The duo have created works honouring the sacred waters of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island); symbolic of contemporary caring for Country, nurturing and healing, and connection to all living things. Inspired by walking on Country, pockets of water traces in soft sands and the reflections of glistening pools are captured when Yalingbila (humpback whales) surface from the deep seas. Yalingbila have survived the whaling industry and station on Mulgumpin (Moreton Island), are a metaphor of resilience and are symbolic of ancestors’ footprints deeply embedded in Country.

Come to the exhibition launch, enjoy the CIAF Fashion Performance on the Friday and return for a Saturday morning workshop with the artists.
